3070S - Q. Can I use a 3070S subwoofer with my electrostatic loudspeakers?
Answer:
A modern
class D amplifier, such as that used in the 3070S, is switching from
rail to rail (either on or off and nothing in between) at a rate orders
of magnitude higher than any audio signal that it might be asked to
produce, and therefore can easily control a loudspeaker load via its low
pass filter output inductors. A reflex ported design can give a
one-note effect in the bass if not designed carefully, but in the case
of the 3070S it is flat, down to its turn over frequency below 30 Hz.
The
way to use the 3070S with electrostatic loudspeakers is not to over do it. We'd
recommend starting with the sub at a level where you can definitely hear
it, then turn it down a bit. A sub is at the correct volume for Hi-Fi
if you only notice it when it is turned off.
