Q Active - Q. How do I update my Q Active system to the latest firmware revision?

Answer:

The firmware for the Q Active Hub is updated automatically when the system is connected to a network that has unrestricted internet access, it uses a method called OTA (Over The Air).  The system polls our servers at intervals to check against the latest revisions available, if it finds an update, it is downloaded in the background without any loss of functionality over the system.  Once downloaded, the system will wait for a point when the system enters standby or appears not to be in use, and will then apply the updates, you may notice the standby LED on the Hub flashes as it re-initialises after the update has been applied.

The loudspeaker firmware update is a manual process and can be performed from the Q Active app. Open the Q Active app, choose the system that you would like to check/update, tap on the settings cog wheel for that system, then find the option 'Speaker Firmware Update', tap on this option, and it will cause the system to check.  Should it find there's an update, proceed with the onscreen instruction (Note. it takes around 30mins to apply the update), but there are some hub LED indicators you should to be aware of:

  1. The standby, left and right speaker LED’s will turn on RED whilst the hub is downloading the firmware from the internet.
  2. The left and right speaker LED’s pulse RED whilst the hub is loading the firmware to the loudspeakers, which also pulse RED, this takes about half an hour.
  3. The system reboots when complete with the usual flashing red standby LED as it initialises.
There is also another process of direct updating loudspeakers via the USB port on the rear of each loudspeaker, this is covered in another article and considered a back-up method should the app be unable to connect for some reason.
