Q. I have a stereo integrated amplifier with no 'sub-out' , but it does have 'stereo out' or 'pre-out', can I connect a subwoofer?
Answer:
Some earlier and current stereo integrated amplifiers will not be equipped with a dedicated subwoofer output, but may have a 'stereo out' or 'pre-out' that can be utilised. The main difference between a 'sub out' or LFE and that of 'Pre' or 'Stereo' out is that the sub-out (LFE) will have what is known as an LPF (Low Pass Filter) circuit which cuts out those frequencies not necessary for true subwoofer performance, whereas the 'pre-out' will carry a full frequency range. This is not a problem for Q Acoustic powered subwoofers as all are equipped with a built in adjustable cross-over that can allow you to filter out those unwanted mid/high frequencies that are being taken care of by the front left and right loudspeakers and let the subwoofer concentrate on producing those low end frequencies.
